Machines built for performance and progression: Rusty Malinoski and the fully redesigned XStar. Watch the convergence of these two epic forces…

This project was the the product of great collaboration between Nemo Designs, Kamp Grizzly, and Bump Films. The concept and creative came from Jay Floyd (Nemo Design) and the piece was directed by Dan Portrait (Kamp Grizzly). As far as Bump Films goes, Mark Bame was the DP and Eric Jeffcoat was the Camera Assistant. We used the RED EPIC with both a PL mount and a Canon mount. All the action on the water was hand held using our Fuji 5.2 10x with a B4 adapter. It looks a little rough but it worked out great for ripping around on boats. For the shot around the airport, factory, and roads we used the Canon mount with a ton of Canon lenses. This gave us a great variety and flexibility.

We also used a bunch of GoPros and a Canon 7D with a water housing. All this in 3 days of shooting.

Post Production was done by Kamp Grizzly utilizing the R3D files right out of the RED straight in to Adobe Premiere Pro. Using the 4K files they were able to zoom and reframe the footage right on the timeline with the native RED RAW footage.

The "Next Generation" Spots producted for MasterCraft Boats.

The 2013 MasterCraft X-Star Commercial Spots with Steel, Shota and Harley.

The piece attached here is a long version we produced for the web. There were also two :30 spots created for the NBC Sports Network with the same treatment.

We shot the night scenes at a marina just out side of Knoxville TN…. near the MasterCraft Factory. The action sequences were out on Lake Telico. We used a RED Epic for the whole shoot but changed out the lens mount. We used a PL adapter so we could mount a B4 lens with a powered zoom. This made it much easier to shoot the action footage on the water. For the night shots around the cabin and dock we used the Canon mount with a bunch of Canon primes and zoom lenses.

For the Post we converted everything down to 2K and edited in FCP7 (We still haven’t made the conversion to X) We did the color correction in house but took the audio down to DigiONE in Portland. (listen closely…. there is a lot going on in the audio track)

We had a good time producing this… and it’s probably one of our best pieces to date.

All hail the little one!

Lots and lots….

Back in the day we had this huge backpack rig with a Sony 999 lipstick camera inside a waterproof flashlight housing with a custom made waterproof video cable connected to a DV deck inside a waterproof pelican case. That’s how we shot all our POV shots for years… Fast forward 10 years and what took thousands of dollars to build now comes in a little package called a GoPro.

Looking at our productions you can see many shots that are in very precarious positions. Some of these shots are DSLR cameras but most are GoPro’s. We have been building rigs for our GoPro cameras since they came out with the original Hero and we are now about to upgrade our stock to the new Hero3s. Yes we have lost a few soldiers to crashes and wrecks but….we have the utmost respect for what these cameras allow us to do and we have rarely been disappointed.

We will be posting some of our best GoPro shots here soon and if we can make some time we might even put up a few hints on how we did them.

Thanks GoPro.

The opening segment to the 2012 Rewind DVD for MasterCraft Boats.

Bump Films has now been producing the Rewind DVD for MasterCraft Boats for 9 years straight. This year, MasterCraft wanted to change the opening segment to be more about the construction and show what really goes into building a boat of this quality. This is what we concocted.

“To see only the outcome makes all the events leading up to it potentially arbitrary and meaningless. But to look at something from its genesis means to see a world of ideas — to see thousands of decisions meticulously working together to make the end look wonderfully inevitable.”

We shot the entire segment with a 5D and a 7D. We had an assortment of lights, dollies, and little toys but the two favorites were the SmallHD monitor and our Nikor 105 f2.5 lens… you can read and see more of how we did it here.

We will put up more Rewind 2012 segments soon but in the mean time you can check out MasterCraft’s channel with all our videos here.

Shooting and Editing all of the 2012 snowmobiles for Ski-Doo.

This project was produced in conjunction with Frontier Films out of Montana for the Ski-Doo dealers and websites. In mid December we had a crew of 7 shooting all the new 2012 sleds in a “secret spot” up in Canada. After we finished up a week of shooting we produces 16 different videos including a segment on each model of snowmobile, a “line up” segment and a :30 TV Spot. It was a serious grind in the edit to get it all done but we had a great time and I think everyone is stoked with the segments.

The segment shown above is called “Master the Mountain” and showcases the Summit X and Freeride models. This piece was shot by Mikael Berntsson (hand held and tripod) and Mark Bame (from the Heli).

You can see all the segments (both French and English… yes we did the French versions too) on Ski-Doo’s 2012 website or on their YouTube page.

This was a new client for us this year… Hydra-Sports Boats. What we thought was going to be a couple boats shot quickly in Connecticut turn into a fairly large project including an big shoot down in the Florida Keys in November and a Dealer DVD containing all 17 boat models.

The segment above is the 3400 CC from the Florida Keys shoot in November. We had some pretty high winds for most of the trip which turn into some decent swells on the Atlantic side of the islands.

If your into the Facebook thing, Mark and Josh from Hydra-Sport, posted some pics from the shoots on the Bump Films facebook page.

This is a project that we do yearly for MasterCraft Boats. “Rewind” is a 90 minute long DVD product video with everything from instructional segments to event coverage to athlete profiles to product walk-throughs. The trailer here is used by MasterCraft to promote the new DVD on their website and is sent out to all the dealers and industry.

The footage for this trailer came from two shoots. First off, we shot 15 of the new 2011 boats in a studio just outside Knoxville. We shot all of the boats on a Canon 5D with a Ziess 50mm and a Nikkor 110mm. Amazing clarity. For more information on this shoot check here.

The second half of the trailer came from a shoot we did with the Phantom camera down on a private sand mine lake south of Orlando. Super amazing camera.

All of us here would like to thank MasterCraft for letting us stretch the boundaries of tradition and make another step forward.
